Juice Fasting

Juice fasting is when you live solely from the liquefied form of fruits and vegetables. A juice fast can last for a day or for months. If you juice for more than 60 days, consult a nutrition expert. Consider adding protein powder and multi-vitamins if you intend to juice for longer than a few days.

A juice fasting diet is within almost everyone’s budget. Farmers markets are excellent locations to get rock bottom prices on fresh produce. You can ask the farmer what pesticides – if any – he uses. It gives you more control over what you consume. Prices can vary considerably from store to store, so take note as you go and you will be amazed how much you can save.

Another excellent way to save money is to concentrate your juicing on whatever vegetables and fruits are currently in season. These are usually the cheapest, and even more so if they grow in your area.

When we were juice fasting, we bought a large box of kale once a week and got a 10% discount for a ‘bulk’ purchase. Most stores will do this if you buy a case or crate of something, but you need to ask. At the end of the week, you might find that what you saved on your food paid for your gas.

There are many ways to fast, but fasting with juice is easiest on your body because it provides needed calories and nutrients. Water fasting takes a lot more determination and will power, and the body can be depleted of basic nutrients and muscle mass if it lasts more than a day or two.

It is important to pick veggies and fruits you enjoy. Also, you should include more veggies than fruits when preparing your juice. Some juice fasts in recent years have a fad quality to them, and rely totally on citrus fruits. Oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes are excellent for our health in moderation. They contain a high acid count and therefore can be detrimental if consumed too much for too long.

One of the most famous juice cleanses in the past couple of decades was the Master Cleanse. It is based on water, maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. Such a cleanse helps the body rid itself of excess mucus and toxins, but does not provide much nutrition in the long run.

A well balanced blend of veggies and fruits creates a balanced alkaline blend that helps restore vitality and health.

There is a spiritual component to juice fasting that shouldn’t be ignored. I’m not talking about religion. Most of us undertake a juice fast to heal some aspect of ourselves that is out of control. The body is the temple of the soul. It is our vehicle for experiencing life on this physical plane. We may not be able to control genetic health issues, but we can influence what we choose to put into our mouths and aim to fuel our physical vehicle with energy that will allow us the most positive experience possible while we walk the earth.

Approaching my juice fasting journey from a perspective of harmonizing my body, mind and emotions with my spiritual self, bestowed a deep sense of satisfaction on me.

One of the insidious ‘illnesses’ we all suffer from in the western world is stress. Juice fasting can help us move beyond the stress and see other areas of our lives we need to reboot in order to live a more meaningful life.

“It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.”

Life is a journey. What is the destination? Nobody truly knows. The journey need not be fraught with health problems, pains, limitations, restrictions, medications, operations and other depressing experiences. The journey should be lived in love, light, laughter, dance and adventure. Enjoy your journey in the full richness of a balanced life.

Make juice fasting part of your journey; it’s never too late to start. Enrich your life experience.
